A new kind of vending machine is helping charities in Perth assist people in need this Christmas season.

For the first time, Light the World “Giving Machines” are operating in Western Australia throughout December until the 28th.  They are part of a worldwide effort to bring communities together to serve individuals and families in need.

A launch was held last week at Joondalup Lakeside Shopping Centre. Leaders from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and local government officials attended the launch.

“It was exciting to see the enthusiasm of community members at the Giving Machine launch,” said Elder Peter Meurs, Pacific Area President of the Church.

“The manager of the Joondalup complex expressed deep appreciation for the opportunity to participate. The local mayors of Joondalup and Wanneroo both spoke about the connections and relationships they have with the Church, and the value the Giving Machines bring to local charities who do so much work for the community. All who attended could see how Giving Machines are helping to light the world.

Elder Meurs quoted the Bible as he encouraged members and friends of the Church to participate in the Giving Machines initiative.

“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.”

Elder Craig Raeside, Pacific Area Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, said, “Often many people want to do something, but their own individual contribution can be relatively limited in what they can do. But, by combining and partnering with such wonderful charities, we’re able to provide meaningful service to those in need.  We can do so much more when we unite in this purpose.”

Paul Lekias, committee chair, said, “Many charity partners will benefit from the funds raised, but far greater is the impact they are having on the lives of everyday people. There have been countless experiences of people commenting how wonderful the Giving Machines are and what a joy it is to give to those in need.”

Ian De Nazareth from Foodbank Australia said he loves the initiative because the person donating is assured that all the money goes to the charity, and the charities can direct the funds to where they’re most needed.  “Those two things made this the perfect campaign,” he said. “It’s so smart. It’s lighting up the world and what better time of year to do it.”

Janine Wood from local charity No Limits, said, “To see such selfless people – willing to help others even in their own crisis—is pretty amazing.”

Other Giving Machine charity partners in Perth include RUAH Community Services, The Smith Family, The Spiers Centre, and Youth Futures.

Quoting former President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Gordon B. Hinckley, Paul Lekias said, “Christmas means giving. The Father gave His Son, and His Son gave His life.  Without giving there is no true Christmas and without sacrifice there is no true worship.”
